The Queensland rules
| Full entitlement | 10 years → 8.6667 weeks, then +4.3333 weeks for each further 5 years |
|---|---|
| Pro-rata | From 7 years, only when the main reason employment ends is death, illness or pressing-need resignation, dismissal for illness, dismissal for reasons other than conduct/capacity/performance (e.g. redundancy), or unfair dismissal. An ordinary resignation between 7 and 10 years gets nothing — Queensland is the strictest state on this. |
| Pay basis | Your ordinary rate of pay at the time the leave is taken (casuals: including the casual loading). |
Worked example
Nine years at $1,500 a week, made redundant = 7.8 weeks ≈ $11,700. The same nine years ending in an ordinary resignation = $0. Timing a resignation past the 10-year mark is worth real money in Queensland.
Other states differ — sometimes by thousands of dollars. Compare with the all-states calculator.
Frequently asked questions
I resigned after 8 years in Queensland — do I get anything?
Generally no. Between 7 and 10 years, pro-rata is only paid for the listed reasons, and ordinary resignation isn't one of them. At 10 years the full entitlement crystallises regardless of reason.
When can I take long service leave in Queensland?
Once you've completed 10 years. After 15 years, additional accruals can be taken as they build.
