Worked example: €50,000
USC €1,032.82 + PRSI €2,118.75 = €3,151.57 a year — €262.63 a month — before income tax is even counted. It's roughly what a month's rent contribution looks like, which is why take-home estimates that skip these two feel so wrong.
Frequently asked questions
How is USC calculated?
In bands on your whole income (once you earn over €13,000): 0.5% on the first €12,012, 2% to €28,700, 3% to €70,044, and 8% above that. On €50,000 the USC is €1,032.82.
Who is exempt from USC?
People whose total income is €13,000 or less pay no USC at all. But cross the threshold by €1 and USC applies to your entire income, not just the excess — a small cliff worth knowing about.
What will PRSI cost me in 2026?
Class A employees pay 4.2% from January to September and 4.35% from October — a blended 4.2375% across the year. On €50,000 that's €2,118.75. Earn €352 a week or less and you pay no employee PRSI (your employer still pays theirs).
